Lenovo ESG

Product Energy Efficiency

Our Approach

When consumers and businesses use energy-efficient products, they save on electricity which contributes to lower CO2 emissions and less of an impact on the environment. It's for these reasons that Lenovo is continually improving the energy efficiency of our products.

We are therefore involved in various energy efficiency initiatives and innovations, including:

  • ENERGY STAR®
  • 80 Plus
  • Product Attribute to Impact Algorithm (PAIA) Project

Through collaboration with other original equipment manufacturers (OEM), as well as industry stakeholder work groups, existing and proposed global IT product energy efficiency policies, regulations and requirements are vetted against current and future technology. The results of this effort are leveraged to develop leading edge products with much improved operating efficiencies.

ENERGY STAR® & BEYOND

ENERGY STAR® is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy that aims to promote energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in hardware of all kinds. Products that meet the required standards and performance levels may be ENERGY STAR® qualified.

Our ENERGY STAR® Certified Products at a Glance

Lenovo offers a full complement of ENERGY STAR® qualified products, this includes:

  • 91%

    of our notebook platforms

  • 82%

    of our desktop platforms

  • 100%

    of our workstation platforms 1,2

  • 82%

    of our server platforms 2

  • 50%

    of our monitors

  1. Lenovo platforms include Think, Idea, and Lenovo product lines.
  2. For pre-configured systems.

Other Initiatives

Lenovo is involved in other energy efficiency protocols and regulations. This includes the U.S. DOE Appliance and Equipment Standards, California Appliance Efficiency Program requirements, Mexico Energy Law, Australia MEPS, China CEC standards, and EU Ecodesign (ErP) requirements.

In China, Lenovo heads the development of the China Energy Efficiency Standard for PCs and the China Green PC Standard. We are also very active in numerous energy efficiency work groups, associations, and initiatives, including the Visual China Energy Efficiency Standard update, the China Environmental Labeling Program, the Energy Saving Work Association of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, and the China Energy Conservation Program. As a result of all these initiatives, Lenovo has introduced many innovative features to improve product energy efficiency.

These include:

PCs Servers
“Lenovo Settings” app in Windows — Provides power management features for the user (i.e., Connected Standby) The “New Customer WebUI” app [ThinkServer management model] — Provides power management features for the user
Adaptive Thermal Management — Adjusts system power and fan speeds based on ambient levels Supports remote deployment of power schemes and global settings — Allows administrators the ability to control and enforce energy savings company-wide
Active Directory and LANDesk® — Supports remote deployment of power schemes and global settings to allow administrators the ability to control and enforce ThinkPad® energy savings company-wide [ThinkServer management model]Lenovo ASHRAE Management — Adjusts processor and fan speeds based on ambient levels
Lenovo EasyResume — Gives quick recovery from computer lid close, balancing low power state by suppressing CPU usage at lid close Rack Planner — Helps users better plan for rack efficiency by increasing rack density and calculating power consumption based on specific configurations
Intelligent Cooling – Balances thermal performance to adjust settings to provide a cooler surface for comfort while optimizing product energy performance Smart Grid - Helps users monitor and manage the power consumption and temperature of ThinkServers with Intel Node Manager. Smart Grid can save power, increase rack density and avoid data center hotspots
Energy Saving Power Supply Unit - When the system detects the power loading is low, PSU turns off the internal fan to save energy consumption. PSU smart-on - When the system detects that the power loading is low in redundant PSU configuration, it can transfer the loading from 2 PSU to 1 PSU to get higher power efficiency and save power

Diagnostics - Capabilities and Easy OS installation (LEPT) embedded

80 PLUS Titanium™ server power supplies or PSUs [available for select System x servers] - 80 PLUS Titanium™ server power supplies or PSUs [available for select System x servers]

Liquid cooling solutions - Can reduce the facility demands for data center chillers, resulting in facility infrastructure savings

Lenovo Efficiency Mode™ (LEM) - Works in cooperation with the operating system to fine tune the operating efficiency of the server. LEM can boost performance per watt efficiency by up to 11 percent compared to a server that is not using LEM

Intelligently managing power consumption - Unused devices embedded in System x servers are either powered down or placed into very low power state automatically during boot time and/or dynamically at run time. Devices include CPU cores, memory channels and DIMMs, PCI express ports, QPI links, SATA and SAS storage controllers, network controllers, serial ports, USB controllers and voltage regulatory devices (VRDs)

80 Plus Titanium™

In addition, the energy efficiency of the power supply units (PSU) in our desktops, workstations, and servers are all tested independently. Those that have more than 80% energy efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% of rated load, and a power factor of 0.9 or greater at 100% load, are certified 80 Plus.

Launched in 2004 by Ecos Consulting, the 80 Plus rating has five certificates– Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Titanium. And the higher the award, the more energy-efficient the product. Lenovo certifies internal power supplies to CLEAResult Plug Load Solutions’ 80 Plus Titanium™ program for power supply efficiency with select System X servers.

Product Attribute to Impact Algorithm (PAIA) Project

Currently, there is no universally accepted method for establishing a product’s carbon footprint (PCF) quickly and easily. The Product Attribute to Impact Algorithm (PAIA) project, of which Lenovo is proud to part of, aims to rectify this.

We are therefore working very closely with the information and communication technology (ICT) industry and academia in this area. We have also developed internal PCF calculation guidance to support quantifying the product life-cycle GHG emissions of our products. For the quicker that we can all determine a PCF, the sooner we can identify lifecycle areas where GHG emissions can be effectively reduced.

In addition to the PAIA project, we have been actively involved in the following carbon footprint initiatives:

  • Product Carbon Footprint China Standard
  • China ICT Product Life-Cycle Assessment Data Service Platform
  • IEC Technical Report GHG Quantification Methodology for Computers
  • China ICT Supporting Low Carbon Economy
  • RBA Product Carbon Footprint Data Allocation Algorithm Development
