Tablets among top gifts this holiday season

When the final numbers roll in, tablet computers will undoubtedly be among the top technological gifts from the 2011 holiday season, according to a report from NBC news affiliate WBIR.

The news provider states that tablets, as well as gaming consoles and TVs, were the most popular electronic items this year, with people from nearly every age range looking to get their hands on the devices.

However, WBIR does note that the 2011 holiday season was a peculiar one compared to years past, as there was no single "breakout gift" that flew off the shelves. In fact, tablet sales were more diverse than in earlier years, as devices from more manufacturers are making their way to the market and proving competitive with some of the big names in the industry.

Going into 2012, the technology industry is very much in transition, as people trade in their traditional computers for more portable -- through perhaps less powerful -- devices. Following this trend, the slim, lightweight Ultrabook™ may find itself at the top of many holiday wish lists in 2012.
