Research: Tablets less than five years from mainstream

Given the enormous amount of hype surrounding tablet computers, it may be easy to assume that the technology couldn't get any more popular. But, according to a recent report from research firm Gartner, tablets are still a few years away from mainstream adoption.

In its latest Hype Cycle Special Report, Gartner evaluates the enthusiasm behind nearly 2,000 technologies, and predicts the impact and value they will have. Among other notable technologies reviewed are cloud computing, near-field communication payments and internet TV.

According to Gartner, media tablets are among the technologies expected to become mainstream in two to five years. This will be largely driven by the introduction of new tablets and the expanded capabilities of such devices. Additionally, as tablets continue to garner more exposure, more consumers and businesses are likely to become attracted to the technology.

Tablet computers first began to make significant noise last year, and have since become one of the most talked-about technologies on the market. According to research firm IDC, 53.5 million tablets are expected to sell this year.
