08-03-2011Introducing children to computersFrom the day they're born, kids today are surrounded with computers. Unlike any other generation, children now will never remember a time when a desktop or laptop wasn't a part of their everyday lives. Many parents may be apprehensive to begin teaching their children how to use a computer at an early age, or may be unsure of how to do it. While there are several approaches parents can take, one factor is important for all to keep in mind, according to a PBS report. "Computers should supplement -- and not replace -- activities and materials such as art, sand, water, books, music, outdoor exploration, experimenting with writing materials, dramatic play and socializing with other children," according to the report, which was based on the consensus of several child development experts. Another important factor involves strict guidance, especially in the developing years. As children become more acclimated with their parents' laptop or desktop PCs, they begin to understand the opportunities available through them. Children left to browse a computer without supervision could expose themselves to inappropriate content, while also putting the computer at risk for scams and leaving its owner vulnerable to identity theft. Knowledge of computers is important for today's children, especially as the educational system becomes more inundated with technology. But, with risks involved, parents would do well to take the proper steps in educating their kids on the ins and outs of safe computer use. |
