Though many industry observers say the software giant may have waited too long to get into the mobile market, ARM Holdings CEO Warren East believes that name recognition could be a huge advantage. Specifically, East says Microsoft and its upcoming Windows 8® will likely overtake Android™ in the tablet space. To date, Google's mobile operating system hasn't made as much headway in the tablet market as some might have expected, and this sluggish growth could present an opportunity for Microsoft. "Consumers are familiar with Microsoft and very familiar with Windows and they're less familiar with an Android environment," East told analysts, according to technology news provider CNET. "Microsoft has an awareness advantage with consumers that the Android folks didn't have." Android did have a strong showing in the fourth quarter of 2011, capturing 39 percent of the tablet market share, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. But as more players enter the market, Android will have to fight to stay competitive with Microsoft, Apple® and others. |
