Expert in tech: looks are not everything

For technology, the way products look and feel are not always the best measurement for quality. While companies are continuously testing out new bells and whistles to make their devices - notebook, laptop and tablets - stand out from the crowd, some consumers may be missing the bigger picture.

According to a recent CNN report, computer companies have gathered at Computex, Asia's largest computer fair, to showcase their latest products.

"I see hundreds of products, but they all look the same," said Swiss designer Peter Wirz. "Many focus on trying to maximize the diversity of products to make a brand, but don't think about the small things that are important at the front end."

What a product will be used for is the main key for purchasing a notebook, laptop or tablet. If looks are the only aspect consumers are concerned about, then capitalizing on great products may be lost.

However, while companies can benefit from targeting the most useful technology, it won't hurt to pursue a combination of flashy appearance and functionality. With a broad array of offerings that accomplish both, today's companies will not need to look far.

For tablets, the world has caught on to the convenience factor. According to research by the NBD Group, tablet sales are expected to reach more than 172 million units by 2014, a significant increase from the 19 million sold in 2010.
