Android tablets projected to close the gap against Apple

As the tablet market continues to be dominated by Apple's iPad, Google's Android operating system is currently the only other OS to reach a double digit market share.

A recent Computerworld report dissected the tablet market, of which the iPad accounted for 83.9 percent in 2010, according to Gartner. In 2011, Apple's hold will decrease to 69 percent of all tablets, as more Android-powered devices reach more of the market. By 2015, Gartner projects iOS to account for 47 percent, giving other manufacturers, especially those developing tablets that run Android, a chance to grab the reins.

"Here, Android looks like the clear winner - although Apple may be helped by all those new iPad owners, some of whom may decide they want a phone with the same OS and apps as their tablet," wrote Computerworld's Sharon Machlis.

While it is only a projection, the market for tablets is still relatively young. However, tablet revenue is expected to reach $70 billion by 2014, increasing from the paltry $11 billion in 2010, according to research by RBC Capital Markets.
